Starting January 1, 2025, Germany will implement a new regulation for electronic invoicing. Businesses will be required to receive and process e-invoices from B2B partners, streamlining transactions and improving efficiency. While it won’t be mandatory to send e-invoices right away, the requirement will be phased in.
What is an E-Invoice?
E-invoices, or electronic invoices, are a step beyond simple digital copies of paper invoices (like PDFs). They are delivered in a structured electronic format that automates and streamlines transaction processes. By integrating e-invoices into your system, such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or NAV, you can simplify invoice processing and significantly reduce transmission errors.
Who does this apply to?
This new requirement affects all companies involved in B2B transactions within Germany. Regardless of the size of your business, if you do business with other companies, you’ll need to be prepared to receive and process electronic invoices.
What are the exceptions?
Some exceptions remain, for example for very small amounts or certain types of services such as tickets. In addition, invoices can still be sent on paper or as a PDF with the recipient’s consent until the end of 2027 if the previous year’s turnover was less than €800,000.
Overview of the deadlines
Mark your calendars for these important dates:
- January 1, 2025: Obligation to receive e-invoices comes into force.
- Until December 31, 2026: Transition period for paper and PDF invoices with the recipient’s consent.
- From January 1, 2028: All B2B invoices must fully comply with e-invoice requirements.
What to do now?
As a Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central user, it’s a good idea to check how well your system is prepared to handle e-invoices. Make sure you’re able to handle different formats, as the exact format can still be negotiated between companies.
What does Anveo recommend?
Anveo recommends preparing technically and organizationally for the introduction of e-invoicing at an early stage. A flexible EDI software solution can help you to react quickly to different requirements.
Anveo EDI Connect is an extension for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (also supports Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009R2 and above) and already offers the possibility to receive e-invoices easily and efficiently. This guarantees quick and easy adaptation to future requirements.
Conclusion
E-invoicing is a great opportunity to digitize and streamline your processes. Use the transition period effectively to get ready. With the right EDI solution and thoughtful planning, this change can be a complete success for your business.
